For Parents

Getting into college can be a lot of work. For parents!

For most competitive colleges, the essays are critical. And any college that accepts the Common Application has agreed to make the essay an important part of acceptance decisions. In general, the more selective the school, the more important the essay becomes.

Writing a memorable and effective essay is also the most challenging part of the application process. Few parents have the specialized skill set to help their children write fantastic college essays. And even those who do still have to deal with the parent-child dynamic.

Having me as a neutral person through the writing process will remove a source of friction between you and your child and take a lot of stress and pressure off everyone.

I serve a number of roles as an essay writing advisor:

  • I guide students to discover the great story that’s already in them. Even if they have an event or subject they want to write about, they need to do it in a way that shows who they are.
  • I teach students how to think about and structure an effective college essay. Most schools do a great job of teaching academic writing, but fail when it comes to writing more personal essays.
  • I help students find their own voice as writers. I don’t write anything for them, this is their essay. I take them through a process that makes their writing convey their personality and strengths in a compelling, memorable way.
  • I edit early in the process, for structure and content; and proofread final drafts to make sure they are error-free and clear.
  • Sometimes, I play the role of coach and supporter for kids who are just struggling. With humor and compassion, I help them get through their blocks and write their essays.

Students I work with are proud of their essays and what they accomplish. And, they are often surprised by the wonderful young adult they discover.
